Primarily there are three things that fight for our attention when we listen to music - the melody, the rhythm and the harmony, but there are many other things such as dynamics, tempo and the use of instrumentation that also affect our reaction to the music we hear. All of the music on today’s program is descriptive of something – be it a place, a thing, an event, an emotion or mood. We will explore and analyze the various ways these composers used the elements, or building blocks of music to help create an image of something as we listen to music that is descriptive.
